Super Premier Event: Evolution Championship Series 2019 Results

The 2019 Capcom Pro Tour’s first Super Premier Event, Evolution Championshiop Series (Evo for short), was held in Las Vegas, NV, USA from August 2nd through 4th. Almost 2,000 players from around the world gathered to compete in the longest running fighting game tournament.

Japan’s RED BULL Hx|Bonchan defeated NASR|Big Bird from the United Arab Emirates 3-2 in Grand Finals to become the 2019 Evolution Champion! Bonchan is having the season of his already storied career. In the last three months alone at Premier Events he took 3rd at Taipei Major in early June, 1st at CEO in late June, and 1st at VSFighting in late July. With this win Bonchan is now at 2nd place on the Global Leaderboard standings with over 3,000 points and is hot on the heels of USA’s RECIPROCITY|Punk.

NASR|Big Bird was knocked into Losers bracket in a 1-2 loss to USA’s iDOM in top 16. Big Bird would eliminate Japan’s CYG BST|Fuudo (2-1), China’s ALUS|Yang Mian (3-1), Japan’s YOG|Machaco (3-0), Japan’s FUDOH|Fudjimura (3-2) and finally United Kingdom’s CYG BST|Infexious (3-0) to earn his spot in Grand Finals.

Big Bird won the first two games in Grand Finals with two rounds being perfects and looked to be on the road to resetting the bracket but Bonchan came back and won the next two matches to tie it all up at 2-2. In the final match Bonchan took the first round with a perfect but Big Bird took the second round in a tense corner exchange, bringing the contest to the final round. The third round was a whirlwind of activity as both players exchanged momentum but Bonchan landed the final blow to secure a 3-2 victory.

The second place finish by Big Bird is his best Premier Event finish of the season so far. While it must be tough to be one hit away from resetting the bracket and having a chance to be Champion and falling just short must be tough, it’s still an incredible achievement. With this placement Big Bird has moved up to 9th place on the Global Leaderboard standings and is in a good position for Capcom Cup!

In late June it was announced that the United Kingdom’s Infexious would be sponsored by Cygames Beast, and the newly christened CYG BST|Infexious has made the most of this opportunity. He took 2nd place at Sonic Boom in mid July, 5th at the VSFighting Premier Event the next week, took 1st place at the Europe West Online Event in late July, and has now taken 3rd place at Evo 2019! That’s an impressive run which has carried him to 10th place on the Global Leaderboard standings! He is now right behind NASR|Big Bird, who eliminated Infexious in Losers Finals 3-0.
