Japan Cup 2017 Results
Japan Cup 2017, held in Tokyo, Japan from August 12th through 13th, is over and Japan’s GRTP|Haitani has taken 1st place. GRPT|Fuudo took 2nd place and Kichipa-mu took 3rd place, both players also being from Japan. Let’s take a look at the Japan Cup 2017 results for top 64.

Japan Cup 2017 Highlights
Japan Cup was a stand-out event for the Capcom Pro Tour once again this season with many memorable moments. 512 of the best players from around Asia (as well as a few from the USA) came together to compete, with Japan’s GRPT|Haitani taking 1st place. Team Grapht as a whole made a big impression at the event and USA’s Chris Tatarian surprised many as well. There were also many incredible matches to be had. Let’s take a look at just a few of the many highlight players and matches of Japan Cup 2017.
Team Grapht Domination
Team Grapht put on an incredible performance at Japan Cup with three of the four members making it into top 16. GRPT|MOV finished at 13th place. Grand Finals was an all Grapht affair, with GRPT|Haitani and GRPT|Fuudo locking up both first and second place for the team respectively. As of the time of this writing, Haitani and Fuudo both have enough points on the Global Leaderboard to qualify for Capcom Cup. MOV is currently at 34th place, which is just a few spots from qualifying himself. With a few months remaining in the season, it’s quite possible that we could see three Grapht team members at Capcom Cup 2017, which would be a tremendous achievement.
Japan’s Kichipa-mu Impresses
One of the surprises to come out of Japan Cup 2017 was Japan’s Kichipa-mu, who has made only infrequent tournament appearances over the last few years. He plays Zangief, which is always a crowd favorite, and he plays the character with great skill. He defeated the likes of GW|Eita, Kindevu (twice), Gachikun, Chris Tatarian, Acqua and Qanba Douyu|Xiao Hai. He lost to r/Kappa|Poongko in Top 32 and got all the way to Losers Finals before being eliminated by GRPT|Fuudo. He’s a very emotional and expressive player, which makes him incredibly entertaining to watch. Regardless of the outcome he also showed great respect for all of his opponents after each match. He finished at an incredible 3rd place. We hope to see a lot more of Kichipa-mu in future events, as I’m sure he made a lot of fans at Japan Cup.
Top 8: Kichipa-mu vs Chris Tatarian
USA’s Chris Tatarian makes Top 8
It’s almost unheard of for a player from the USA to enter an Asian tournament as stacked as Japan Cup and get top 8, and that’s what Chris Tatarian managed to accomplish. Prior to the event he has been staying in Japan to train, and that hard work has paid off. He defeated opponents including Machabo, Esuta, and RZR|Infiltration along the way. He was beaten by Haitani in top 16 and was eliminated by Kichipa-mu in top 8. This 7th place finish is his best performance so far this season.

Pools: Abigail vs Abigail Big Body Brawl, XYZZY vs Kindevu
Big body grappler characters like Zangief always bring the hype, but the newest character Abigail towers over them all. Korea’s XYZZY faced off against Japan’s Kindevu in pools in an Abigail vs Abigail match where the characters virtually filled up the screen! Having these two big body characters go at it was very hype and also visually hilarious to watch.
Pools: Hx|CYG BST|Daigo Umehara vs AW|Nemo
Hx|CYG BST|Daigo Umehara and AW|Nemo, both Japanese Street Fighter legends, faced off in pools in an exciting match. Daigo’s 5 Flash Kicks to end the first round of the second match was a crowd pleaser. Both players played aggressively and Nemo sometimes threw everything but the kitchen sink at Daigo.
Top 16: r/Kappa|Poongko vs Gachikun
Korea’s r/Kappa|Poongko is always fun to watch because A) he plays Kolin, a character that is virtually unseen in top CPT play and B) win or lose, he’s very emotional and isn’t afraid to let it show. Japan’s Gachikun is one of the most exciting Rashid players in top level play right now, which says a lot because there are a lot of Rashid players this year. This was an exciting match where Gachikun had momentum early but Poongko fought his way back.
Top 8: r/Kappa|Poongko vs GRPT|Haitani
This was a thrilling match to watch as Poongko’s Kolin faced off against Haitani’s Necalli. It went down to the final match with Poongko getting match point. Haitani would clutch out the win, but Poongko was within one round of sending Haitani to Losers.
Top 8: AW|Nemo vs Qanba Douyu|Xiao Hai
Nemo asserts himself early, leading things off with a perfect first round and going up 2-0, but never count out China’s Qanba Douyu|Xiao Hai. This match had a lot of great reads on both sides. It was a great match between two aggressive players and Xiao Hai’s hard-fought comeback was well earned.
Winners Finals: GRPT|Haitani vs GRPT|Fuudo
GRPT|Haitani and GRPT|Fuudo are both veteran players at the top of their field and as such they have played each other many times before. You could tell that they were very familiar with one another’s playstyle and line of thinking. Both players made reads at times that seemed puzzling to onlookers but were obviously intended to be catch the opponent by surprise and break up the predictability.
Losers Finals: Kichipa-mu vs GRPT|Fuudo in Losers Finals
This match was the end of Kichipa-mu’s fantastic run at Japan Cup, facing off against GRPT|Fuudo. Kichipa-mu is a newcomer to tournaments in general, much less being just one win away from Grand Finals. Fuudo is obviously a veteran who has been in this position many times. That disparity of experience didn’t show through, however, as Kichipa-mu took an early lead and made Fuudo work hard for the win. Both players made some sick reads, but Kichipa-mu really impressed here even though it was Fuudo that came out on top.
Grand Finals: GRPT|Haitani vs GRTP|Fuudo
Grand Finals was a runback of their face-off in Winners Finals and the result was the same, a thrilling match between two veteran players who have played each other many times with Haitani coming out the victor. Haitani and Fuudo both had incredible performances, with Haitani taking the 1st place trophy. Fuudo’s only losses were to Haitani, once in Winners Finals and the other in Grand Finals. This is Haitani’s second Premier Event win for the season. A first place finish has eluded Fuudo so far, but he has a string of 2nd and 3rd place finishes at Premier Events that is very impressive. We are sure to see both players compete at Capcom Cup 2017 in December.
