Latin America Regional Finals 2017 Results

The third of four Regional Finals for the 2017 Capcom Pro Tour season has concluded. The Latin America Regional Finals 2017 was held in Sao Paulo, Brazil from November 2nd through 4th. Brazil’s AAG|DidimoKOF has taken 1st place and earned the 400 points up for grabs for taking 1st place. More importantly, the win at a Regional Final gives him an automatic qualifying spot at Capcom Cup 2017 regardless of his position on the Global Leaderboard. GAM|Caba from the Dominican Republic took 2nd place and SB|DoomSnake507 from Panama took 3rd place. Now let’s take a look at the Latin America Regional Finals 2017 results for top 8.

Latin America Regional Finals 2017 Highlights

Brazil’s F3|Brolynho and Dominican Republic’s RISE|MenaRD, the two players from the Latin America region who have already earned enough points to get into Capcom Cup, were unable to attend the Latin America Regional Finals. This had some interesting implications.

First of all, the duo held the number 1 and 2 spots respectively on the Latin America leaderboard. Due to their absence, F2G|Moise (who was 8th on the leaderboard) and AAG|DidimoKOF (9th place) were substituted. AAG|PR3DA won the Last Chance Qualifier at the event to round out the 8 players for the finals. The absence of Brolynho and MenaRD was obviously good news for AAG|DidimoKOF as he went on to win the Latin America Finals and earn a qualifying spot at Capcom Cup. If not for Brolynho and MenaRD’s absence, he would have had to win the Last Chance Qualifier to get into the Finals otherwise.

Also, the fact that no Capcom Cup qualified players took part in the Finals is bad for Korea’s NL, who held 31st place with 740 points on the leaderboard. Because the Regional Final offers an automatic qualifying spot, NL would have been pushed out of Capcom Cup qualification no matter who won this Regional Finals. If Brolynho or MenaRD had attended the Finals and won, the automatic qualifying spot would not have mattered as both are qualified via points anyway and NL would have held onto the very last qualifying spot.

AAG|DidimoKOF Wins and Qualifies for Capcom Cup!

Brazil’s AAG|DidimoKOF has had a good 2017 season with four top 8 finishes in Ranking Events as well as another 3 Ranking Events where he placed just outside of top 8 prior to the Finals. Winning the Latin America Regional Finals could not have worked out better for DidimoKOF, as he did not have enough points to get into Capcom Cup contention via points. The 400 points awarded for this first place only brought him up to 37th place on the standings. As a Regional Final, his win awards him one of the very few critical automatic qualifying spots for Capcom Cup. He played superbly at this event and he and his Dhalsim will make a great addition to Capcom Cup 2017 in early December.

Now let’s take a look at a few highlight matches from the Latin America Regional Finals.

AAG|DidimoKOF (Brazil) vs F2G|Moise (Chile)

AAG|DidimoKOF’s Dhalsim did a great job of switching between zoning and rushdown strategies while F2G|Moise’s Laura struggled to get in and stay close. There were a lot of ebbs and flows to this match as both players found some level of success at various points. This one came down to the last round of the last match with both players having virtually no health remaining. When DidimoKOF landed the final hit he pumped his fist in a well-deserved celebratory pop-off!

SL|Stunner (Brazil) vs Mono (Puerto Rico)

Mono’s fantastic F.A.N.G. play, which is rare to see nowadays, faced off against SL|Stunner’s aggressive Cammy. By using F.A.N.G.’s zoning ability to great effect Mono went up 2-0. Stunner adjusted and won the next match to bring it 2-1, at which point Mono switched to Kolin. The motivation for the character change isn’t clear and it certainly didn’t work out as Stunner won the next match and tied it up 2-2. This set came down the last very last round. It was so close that Stunner actually had no life left on his health bar due to F.A.N.G.’s poison when he landed the last hit to win 3-2.

GAM|Caba (Dominican Republic) vs Furia|HKDASH (Brazil)

GAM|Caba began his rampage through the Losers Bracket here in this great match against Furia|HKDASH. HKDASH’s aggressive M.Bison makes great use of Devil’s Reverse and other movement options to keep Caba’s Guile off balance. This is another match that came down to the last round of the last match. After this 3-2 win, Caba would then go on to eliminate AAG|PR3DA (3-1), SL|Stunner (3-1) and finally SB|DoomSnake507 (3-1) on his way to face AAG|DidimoKOF in Grand Finals.

AAG|DidimoKOF vs GAM|Caba in Grand Finals

It was DidimoKOF that put Caba into the Losers Bracket way back in the very first round of the tournament with a 3-1 score. Now Caba gets a runback in Grand Finals. With a Capcom Cup automatic qualifying spot on the line both players were understandably tense and all of that energy from both players was on display in this short but incredibly intense set. Both players laid it all out. DidimoKOF took an early 2-0 lead but Caba kept fighting and worked very hard to tie it up 2-2. DidimoKOF would go on to win the last match in a thrilling scramble and jumped up in elation. DidimoKOF from Brazil will be the third player to represent Latin America in Capcom Cup 2017.
