SoCal Regionals (SCR) 2017 Highlights

Japan’s YOUDEAL|Yukadon secured his second Premier Event win of the season here at SoCal Regionals 2017, having won DreamHack Summer 2017 in June. He continues to have a great 2017 CPT season and will be at Capcom Cup 2017.

With this being a Premier Event SCR was obviously stacked with top players so we’ll single out a few others that stood out. Korea’s Devil.R|NL took 2nd place, besting his previous highest placement of 3rd place at the Fighter’s Spirit Ranking Event in May. NL’s only losses in this event were both to Yukadon, once in top 32 and the other in Grand Finals.

RISE|MenaRD from the Dominican Republic was one of the most fun players to watch at this event and is having a banner season. He came into SCR with a string of 1st and 2nd place finishes at Ranking Events (two 1st and three 2nd) so far. Three of the five highlights in the Capcom Top 5 Moments of SoCal Regionals video below feature MenaRD, and for good reason.

Last but certainly not least we’d like to mention USA’s SonicBoxx|JB (profile JB (2) because he was the 2nd player to earn CPT points under the name JB), who is quietly raising his profile as the season goes on with his thrilling Rashid play. He took 3rd place and against the level of talent present that’s a big achievement.

Now let’s take a look at just a few of the many highlight matches from SoCal Regionals 2017.

RISE|MenaRD vs PG|Punk in Top 16

PG|Punk, sometimes referred to by his nickname “The Alpha”, made use of his usual antics between rounds to try to get into RISE|MenaRD’s head. MenaRD stayed focused and closed out the win in an incredibly thrilling match, standing up with a much-deserved pop-off when he closed the deal and eliminated Punk.

RISE|MenaRD vs GFuel|Verloren in Top 8

Korea’s GFuel|Verloren has the ability to play against fellow countryman XYZZY, who is one of the best Birdie players out there. This match proves that while he may have knowledge playing against Birdie as a character, it’s not quite the same when that character is in the hands of another player. For instance, RISE|MenaRD’s ability to throw out his headbutt and catch his opponent has a success rate that makes you wonder if MenaRD has some psychic ability. This was an incredible match that not just came down to the last round of the last game, but it was a whomever gets the last hit wins situation. MenaRD would catch Verloren with an anti-air jumping jab to finish Verloren.

Devil.R|NL vs RISE|Smug in Top 8

RISE|Smug has been doing a lot of traveling this year and it has served him well, both in leveling up his play and also positioning himself for a spot at Capcom Cup 2017. This match against Devil.R|NL is a match between Smug’s Balrog with his relentless offense and incredible damage potential versus NL’s Cammy which can inflict damage but relies on footsies and precision. Smug would go up 2-0 and be on match point in the third game but NL would stay alive in that third game and bring it back to win three straight to finish off Smug 3-2 in a great comeback.

Devil.R|NL vs RISE|MenaRD in Losers Semi-Final

NL took a lead 1-0, doing a good job of keeping MenaRD’s offense in check. In the second game MenaRD’s Birdie came back more aggressive and tied it up 1-1 with a very exciting EX grab that devastated NL’s low health Cammy. They would go back and forth to tie the score again 2-2 and the set would end with an explosive finish. MenaRD threw NL into the corner and once again landed his EX command grab, bringing NL down to just a sliver of life. NL immediately launched his Critical Art and caught MenaRD trying to jump away, finishing him off and securing a 3-2 win to move on.

YOUDEAL|Yukadon vs Devil.R|NL in Grand Finals

YOUDEAL|Yukadon sent Devil.R|NL to Losers bracket in top 32 and NL fought his way through a gauntlet of top players to get a runback opportunity in Grand Finals. Since NL was in Losers bracket he would have to win two full 3 out of 5 sets to take 1st place, but despite the challenge it’s certainly possible. NL started the set by taking the first game and going up 0-1 but Yukadon took control from the second game going forward, making adjustments and punishing NL’s mistakes to go on to win the next 3 games to win Grand Finals 3-1 and become the SoCal Regionals 2017 Champion.
