TWFighter Major 2017 Results
TWFighter Major 2017, held October 7th through 8th in Taipai, Taiwan, is over and Japan’s CO|Dogura has taken 1st place! CO|Dogura has been competing in a lot of events this season but this is his first win of the season, and the first Premier Event win of the Street Fighter 5 era! It was an incredible Grand Finals between him and Capcom Cup 2015 Champion GGP|Kazunoko, who took 2nd place. We will bring you highlights from this event soon. Mago took 3rd place. TWFighter Major 2017 Highlights
With players looking to gather final CPT points in the hopes of qualifying for Capcom Cup 2017 it was clear that TWFigher Major 2017, being one of only two remaining Premier Events for the season, was going to be full of sharks. This was one of the most stacked Asian tournaments of the year as the many early upsets of top players clearly illustrate. GRPT|MOV (Japan), DNG|Itabashi Zangief (Japan), RZR|Infiltration (Korea), PandaTV|Jiewa (China), and GRPT|Fuudo (Japan), each among the region’s top players, were eliminated in pools! In the end the top 8 would be dominated by players from Japan, with HotDog29 being the lone representative from Hong Kong.
Japan’s CO|Dogura Earns 1st Win of the Season
Japan’s CO|Dogura shocked many (and perhaps even himself) with his hard-fought win at TWFighter Major 2017. He has traveled a lot more than last year to compete and has finished in more point-earning placements as well. However, prior to this event his best Premier Event placements have been just outside of top 8 as well as a few top 3 placements at Ranking Events. He has been grinding his way toward a Capcom Cup berth with small steps but he hadn’t earned that elusive win. It’s incredible that Dogura managed to get his first win of the season at this event, one of the most stacked Premier Events in Asia! As the event moved along you could see the tension and nervous energy build slowly in Dogura’s face and was very visible in Grand Finals. When he locked in his victory against fellow countryman and 2015 Capcom Cup Champion GGP|Kazunoko in that set his emotions spilled out. He recently started a family as well, which makes this win all the more meaningful. With this win Dogura is now ranked 14th on the Global Leaderboard with 1,046 points and has earned himself a spot at Capcom Cup 2017. He’s put in a lot of hard work this season and it has deservedly paid off.
Now let’s take a look at just a few highlight matches from TW Fighter Major 2017.
Kichipa-mu vs SPZ|NL in Top 32
There were many fantastic matches at TWFighter Major this year and this one between Japan’s Kichipa-mu and Korea’s SPZ|NL took place in top 32. NL’s precise Cammy faced off against Kichipa-mu’s Zangief in a back and forth battle that went to the final round in every game. Between games both players were seen fanning themselves from the ordeal. It came down to the last round of the last game and it was an unbelievable ending. Both players were very low on life when Kichipu-ma managed to snatch the life lead as timer ticked down toward zero. With seconds left, NL landed his Critical Art and Kichipu-ma looked resigned to having lost. However, the timer hit zero before NL’s Critical Art could do enough damage to regain the life lead, so Kichipu-ma won! When Kichipu-ma looked up and it registered what had happened, he jumped up in elation and began a much deserved celebration!
Kichipa-mu vs GRPT|Haitani in Top 8 Losers
Kichipa-mu faces off against Japan’s GRPT|Haitani, one of the five gods of Japanese Street Fighter, in a back and forth slugfest that went down to the final round. Between each round you can see Kichipu-ma’s likeable, expressive emotional outbursts contrasting nicely with Haitani’s stoic, almost expressionless demeanor. Not only did this come down to the last round, but it ended with a situation where either player could have won with one final hit. After a heart-stopping scramble, Haitani landed his EX foot stomp to seal the deal and move on with a 3-2 win.
CO|Dogura vs GGP|Kazunoko in Grand Finals
GGP|Kazunoko was the player who sent CO|Dogura to the losers bracket in Winners Semi-Finals. Because Dogura was in the losers bracket he would have to win two full sets to take first place, which is a very steep hill to climb but certainly possible. Dogura started off strong, fighting his way to a 2-0 lead. Kazunoko came back strong winning the next game with a perfect final round to bring it 2-1. The final game of the set came down to the last round and after a scramble Dogura caught Kazunoko with a mirror in the corner to narrowly win the game, taking the first set 3-1 and resetting the bracket.
The second set was another back and forth thriller with emotions on both players high. There were sick reads on both sides and, due to the high stakes, some drops by both players. Dogura took a 2-1 lead with game four going to the last round. After weathering some offense by Kazunoko he would land a crouching jab to end the second set 3-1. After securing the win Dogura’s barely pent-up emotions were released and he collapsed onto the floor with happiness and relief. Dogura had won his first Premier Event and secured a spot for himself at Capcom Cup 2017.
