EGX 2016 Results
EGX 2016, held in Birmingham, England from September 22nd through 25th, has concluded and the top 16 results are in! Taiwan’s ZOWIE|GamerBee has won his second straight Premier Event, having taken 1st place at Japan Cup 2016 at Tokyo Game Show last week.
Because GamerBee has already qualified for Capcom Cup at a prior Premier Event, there is no automatic qualifier for winning this event and according to the 2016 Capcom Pro Tour Rules there will be an additional qualifying spot to earn via Global Ranking Points.
UK’s Ryan Hart took 2nd place and Japan’s CBZ|Nuki (Onuki) took 3rd place.

Capcom’s Top 5 Moments of EGX 2016
CBZ|Onuki (Nuki) vs BST|Daigo Umehara
In Top 8 two true Street Fighter legends from Japan opposed one another. BST|Daigo Umehara needs no introduction, as he is one of the most decorated Street Fighter players in history. CBZ|Onuki is more renowned for his Street Fighter 2 and Street Fighter 3 days and, like Daigo, is a character loyalist. He has played Chun-Li at the highest levels for over a decade.
The match itself lived up to its billing, and was a great showcase of clutch plays and footsies. Daigo took an early lead 2-0, closing out the initial match with classic Medium Kick into Critical Art and the second match with footsies, all the while chucking a lot of fireballs to keep Chun-Li away. The match was far from over, however, as Onuki fought hard in each round to land damaging attacks while trying to back Daigo into the corner. He landed a great Critical Art through one of Daigo’s fireballs in one round and used instant overheads in the corner to finish Daigo off in two others to tie it at 2-2.
The last match of the set featured a pretty epic scramble at the end of the second round in which Daigo somehow came out on top, , but it was Onuki that would win the final round by throwing Daigo to the ground to take the overall victory in the set!
Ryan Hart vs CBZ|Oniku (Nuki)
Ryan Hart stands right along Daigo and Onuki in terms of his Street Fighter legacy and this match against Onuki in Losers Finals was a great showcase of the two veteran top players. Ryan had been using Ken through most of EGX but he switched to Guile in this matchup, hoping that the character’s unique moveset could help disrupt Chun-Li’s gameplan to stay close. The strategy showed signs of great promise (Ryan won with a perfect in the second round) but Onuki still won the first match to go up 0-1. Ryan did a great job of mixing offense and defense, landed some big combos, and won the next 2 matches to go up 2-1. Onuki brought it back and tied it up 2-2, finishing Ryan with instant overhead mixups. Sadly, on round 1 of the final match Onuki’s stick malfunctioned (for the second time during this event), which resulted in downtime as the organizers corrected the situation to continue. When the action finally resumed, Ryan took control and won the final match rather convincingly and took the overall win 3-2.
Grand Finals: ZOWIE|GamerBee vs Ryan Hart
Grand Finals came down to ZOWIE|GamerBee and Ryan Hart. Ryan Hart, being from the UK, was obviously the crowd favorite at the event as he represented the last European to defend their home turf. Ryan started off as Guile and at first the Grand Finals looked like it would be a back and forth slugfest, with both taking a round in the first match. However, GamerBee landed his Critical Art at the very beginning of the third round, giving him a substantial life lead, and GamerBee finished the match convincingly to go up 1-0. After the first match Ryan switched from Guile back to Ken, but it did not change the situation much. GamerBee ended up winning the Grand Finals 3-0.

ZOWIE|GamerBee has had a great 2016 Capcom Pro Tour season so far and due to his win at Japan Cup 2016 the week prior he was already qualified for Capcom Cup 2016 before EGX. At EGX he looked relaxed and having a good time, and you could at times see a grin on his face when the stream camera panned back onto his face after winning a match. He won EGX 2016 in the winners bracket. GamerBee is without a doubt a force to be reckoned with and we look forward to seeing what he will show us as the season continues and, ultimately, when we see him at Capcom Cup 2016.
